Sir Henry Cotton Bursary - Friday 7th June 2024

During the formation of Gosfield Lake Golf Club, we were extremely fortunate to have the help, encouragement and advice of three times Open Champion, Sir Henry Cotton. His philosophy was that golf should be available to everyone and that, above all, it should be enjoyable for all.

With that in mind, the Club formed a Bursary which was signed on our first Pro-Am day, 5th June 1989. The Bursary Fund, named after Sir Henry Cotton, is managed by a number of trustees including Founder Members of the Club, the Club President and the current Club Captain.

Each year, the minutes of the Trustees Meeting and the financial statements are presented to the Annual Members Meeting and are published on the noticeboard.

The primary purpose of the Bursary is “to advance the level of junior golf at Gosfield Lake Golf Club and in particular, to enable juniors to improve and progress their play.”

The Trust document sets out how the money is to be spent. The money is used to assist Junior Memberships, to pay for lessons with the Club Professional and to pay expenses for County, Club and Inter-Club competitions. The Bursary supports coaching programmes for Club juniors from beginners to our Youth Shield team.

The Bursary has been a great success rising in excess of £100,000 since 1989 and has assisted many hundreds of young golfers, here at Gosfield, since it was first established in 1989.

The Sir Henry Cotton Bursary Day event is held in June each year in order to raise funds for the Bursary. It is a popular event with up to 30 teams of 4 players regularly entering. In recent years, the Junior Section has organised a separate Junior Bursary Fund competition in order to raise funds and give the juniors themselves an opportunity to show their understanding and appreciation of all that the adult members of the Club do for them.

The next event is being held on Friday 7th June 2024
